Samm Shackleton
Samm Shackleton is a Yorkshire-based artist working across performance, installation, video and writing. Their practice approaches performance as a way of carrying something through the body, through time and through relationship. Working with everyday materials and durational actions, Shackleton moves between public interventions and site-responsive encounters, treating the body as a site of memory where ordinary gesturesaccumulate significance. Rooted in recovery and shaped by spirituality, the work stays close to what is unfinished, where endurance, devotion and presence emerge through the simple insistence of staying. Performance becomes a way of discovering what the body knows more than the person performing it.
Samm is a co-founder of OTHER and this collaboration was born out of that experimental practice led crucible. together they make confrontational/confessional performances that explore intimacy, control and somatic memory. They offer compact site aware work that foregrounds the body as a site of inheritance and compulsion. They understand making performance art as something they do to make sense of experiences for themselves and others, to learn, transform, and find meaning.
