Future Ritual is a practice of gathering, curating and organising. We collaborate with artists to create contemporary expressions of performance and ritual, working to support the emergence of new and more attuned cultures.

Key Info

Field Work runs Tuesday 28 July to Monday 3rd August.

We will be based at ‘Into the Woods Cumbria’, a private campsite amid biodiverse land.

This is a residential workshop, meaning we will live together for the week. We will be based on a four acre private campsite amid biodiverse land. From this base we will walk to and spend time with evocative sites in the area, including ancient monuments, forests, fields, rivers and former industrial sites, now overgrown. Wherever we are, the landscape will guide and shape our work.

The programme will balance collective and solo practice. Our explorations will involve small group sessions, conversational exchange, individual and collaborative tasks, devising performance actions, evening sharings, practices of listening, and periods of silence.

The workshop involves extended periods of moderate physical activity, including walks of up to 5 miles.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, along with soft drinks, teas, coffees and water. Optional extras (card payments on site) for other drinks (including alcohol) and use of the sauna.

The FR team for the week are Joseph Morgan Schofield, Regina Agard-Brathwaite, zack mennell and James Dolan.

Next Steps

Please read all the info on this page, which contains important updates.

Please make final payments - preferably by Bank Transfer to Future Ritual, with the Reference ‘Field Work Your Surname’, 10188223, 60-02-62.

Card payments can be made for concession, standard and supporter rates if needed.

Book travel if coming by train, as prices will rise!

We will soon circulate an indicative packing list, and an onboarding form. Please complete the onboarding form when you are able to, which helps us plan for arrival, catering and safety.

Documentation

We invite you to minimise the use of technology and devices, especially in the first few days, and to think about alternative modes of documenting the week.

If you are creating photographic or video records, please practice sensitivity and with the consent of other participants.

Long term collaborators Baiba Sprance and Marco Berardi will be present on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 August to make a short film, giving a sense of this special encounter. We recongise cameras can shift the nature of a workshop for some - there will be no obligation to appear in the film.

Travel by Train

The nearest mainline station is Penrith, well served by trains from London, Manchester and Glasgow. Please plan to arrive at Penrith station by 3pm on Tuesday 28 July.

We will meet you at the station, and travel together in taxis to the site. This is a 20/25 minute drive.

On departure day, Monday 3 August, we plan to have you back in Penrith by 1pm, so book a train after this!

The train times are advertised now, via sites like Trainline, and prices will not get cheaper. So book soon!

Travel by Car

The address is: Into the Woods Cumbria, Maughanby Farm, Penrith, CA10 1NP. There is ample space to park, and charge electric vehicles at the site.

Please arrive ready to begin by 4pm on Tuesday 28 July. We will finish around 12pm on Monday 3 August.

If you are able to offer a ride share for any of the other participants, please let us know!

Camping & Outdoor Living

Accommodation is in tents. Our ambition is to tune in and immerse ourselves in this calm and beautiful place.

You will need to provide you own tents and sleeping materials. We will be the only people onsite, so there is plenty of space to go for quiet periods, and to pitch your tent close to or far from the group.

There are plenty of covered and sheltered spaces on the site, so you only really need the tent to sleep in and something relatively basic will do you fine!

There are lots of helpful articles which recommend tents to those new to camping, like this one.

There are showers with (usually) hot water and compost toilets on site.

There is no WiFi onsite and phone signal is patchy.

The campsite have recently added a woodfired sauna to the site. We have arranged exclusive use for the week - this comes at the extra cost of £20 (for the week) for those who want to make use of it. We will take payments for this on site.

Be prepared for all varieties of British weather! Bring layers for cold evenings, rain jackets, sturdy shoes for walking across uneven fields and shoes that are easy to slip on and off for the campsite.

Midge nets and bug spray (preferably one that doesn’t contain forever chemicals!) also advised.

We will share an indicative packing list to help you plan in the next few weeks.

Eating & Drinking

Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided, prepared by the Future Ritual Team. All meals will be plant led, with a mix of oven-y things, BBQs and making use of the wood fired pizza oven.

We will ask for help occasionally with chopping and washing up.

Teas, coffees and some soft drinks will also be included. Additional drink options (including alcohol) will be available, to be paid onsite.

Please bring a couple of snacks for each day - preferably things you can take out into the field with you, which do not need refrigerating.

There are no shops or pubs within easy walking distance, though we can do emergency drives out. Please come with everything you think you will need!

In the evening, we will light fires and sit under Cumbria’s dark skies.

Risk, Safety & Responsibility

This is a collective situation Future Ritual is cultivating in collaboration with all of you. By participating in Field Work, you agree to take responsibility for your actions and offerings, and share responsibility in co-creating a productive and generous encounter.

We will circulate an onboarding form which, amongst other things, is a tool for informed consent.

This form will ask if there are any medical conditions, adaptations, histories, illnesses, injuries or  experiences which you want the Future Ritual team to know about. We can factor these into our planning.

Emergencies
We will collect emergency contact details from you.

You can give Joseph’s phone number (to follow) as an emergency contact to people offsite.

One of the FR team is a first aider.

If you have a safety concern or welfare issue, speak to Joseph or any member of the FR team immediately.

Legal
Future Ritual has clear legal obligations to you in terms of safety and liability, and our work is guided by the law and the conditions of our insurance. We have public liability and event insurance in place covering this programme.

All activities which fall under the umbrella of the programme are planned to minimise the risks of physical harm and take place in areas where we have the right to access. We will share clear guidance on safer working out in the field at sites we visit.

We strongly recommend that you take out your own Personal Accident Insurance or Travel Insurance.

Discretionary activities undertaken in downtime, or otherwise off the programme, are undertaken at your own risk. Participants are responsible for their own conduct and should avoid illegal actions, including entering land without permission.

For clarity, wild swimming is not part of the Field Work programme and we cannot recommend it to you.

Collective
Beyond these conditions, we also ask that you recognise the collective nature of this workshop. This means the actions of an individual can have repercussions on the wider group’s experience. Amongst other things, practicing responsibly would look like:

  • considering the impact actions and experiments may have on other participants, the team, the public, the landscape, livestock and wildlife

  • informing the Future Ritual team or facilitators if you are going offsite, or stepping away for a while

  • avoiding placing yourself in physical danger; accidents happen but may have an outsize impact on the experience

  • being attentive to your own physical and psychological limits, and communicating with facilitators if you need to step back

  • using your own agency to raise concerns or report issues about the safety of space, safeguarding and duty of care

  • respecting the nature of the venue (Into the Woods) as a working farm

We look forward to seeing you in the field!
