How can slow process + analogue experimentation re-enchant our creative work?
Emerging from her current research project, The Abyss System, Julia invites participants to enter, explore + co-create an abyssal world.

  • Abyssal - relating to deep, mysterious depths;
    of or like an abyss: immeasurable; unfathomable

In this real-time process laboratory, we will be constructing + inhabiting a black box cosmos of slow-time enchantments. Working with the fading autumn light, we will visually map and model thinking + creative process, forge coexistent choreographies + generate twilight performative beings. 

This is an approach that reimagines the black box (theatre, cinema, camera, mind, and eye/i) as a site of strange speculative agency, slow cognition, radical adaptation, and analogue experimentation. The abyss methodology investigates the creative process as an act of conjuring + of cultivating the conditions for wonder – into | out of the dark.

The explorations over the 5-days are intended to be cumulative, and by the end, we will have co-created a unique black box abyss universe.

The workshop draws on + expands Julia’s extensive experience working with the interplay of performance, pinhole photography, video projection, sculptural objects, psychological garments + hybrid personae.

The week will involve:

  • Focusing exercises that support seeing/hearing, noticing + imagining

  • Guiding slow-time attention towards close observation + capturing of detail

  • Creating visual maps of thinking + translating these into scores for performative choreographies

  • Developing black box texts through real-time dictation + transcription

  • Sometimes working through/in the dark, with eyes closed or covered, nurturing other muscles of perception + concentration

  • Explorations in disrupting + augmenting the body boundaries, extending potentials of physical form 

  • Working with processes of folding, stitching, cutting, sticking, binding, unpicking + rearranging of materials, bodies + objects




Future Ritual says: Julia Bardsley makes new worlds out of the technologies, energies and cultural detritus of the present - designing aesthetics, logics and conditions which allow new processes to emerge, with strange and unexpected results. We’re excited to dive into the abyss with her, and recommend this to anyone looking to break new ground in their practice, or deepen their relationship to process and performance.


who is this for?

We welcome those at any stage of practice, including those who are relatively emerging, those who have practiced for many years, and those who are returning to a practice.

We will experiment with materials, body, mark-making, movement, text, actions + space within a carefully curated abyssal framework.

The workshop is for the curious, for those who welcome slowness, and are open to experimentation, focused processes, and the pleasures of unexpected discoveries.

The studio is located on the second floor of the Bussey Building, a former industrial warehouse. Regrettably, there is currently no lift access to this studio.

There are 44 steps, across 5 flights with between 5 and 10 steps each. There is a handrail along the stairs. There are bathrooms on the same floor as the studio.

We are experimenting with a new sliding scale for pricing. Use the codes below to access the lower priced places.

  • £490 - If you have external funding or are financially secure, you are comfortably able to afford modest luxuries like overseas holidays or to set money aside in savings.

  • £350 - If you have a reliable source of income that more than covers your basic financial needs, you don't have to worry about the costs of nights out. Code: SS350

  • £260 - If your income covers your needs with some left over, but you budget consciously and wouldn’t describe yourself as financially secure. Code: SS260

  • £180 - If you work for minimum wage or have a similarly low & precarious income. The number of the lowest tier places is limited to three in each workshop. Code: JBSS180

There is the option to pay a £100 deposit, with the balance payable one month before the workshop, or to pay the full amount now.

Please note that deposits are non-refundable if you have to cancel your place.

However, if you have paid the full amount and need to cancel your place we will refund you the balance (price minus deposit), as long as cancellation is more than 4 weeks before the workshop (22 September). Cancellations less than 4 weeks before the workshop are non-refundable.
